“Sisters of the night here my call
For I Lillias speak to you all
A crimson sky and a full blood moon
Births the day of night written in the runes
Pagan roots run deep within
The curse that haunts the hunted kin.”

Sarah J. Primrose- Descendant: Bad Blood

This is not the first murder that the city of Edinburg. In fact, it is not the first grisly murder. In the infamous Royal Mile is the newest sight for murder. The bodies of young women are found and that started the ever-running brain of Charlotte MacLaren. As a criminal investigative journalist, she knows that this isn’t just your average serial killer. After enlisting her friends, a police officer and her sister’s girlfriend who happens to be a self-proclaimed witch, she dives deep into the supernatural world. She had no idea what she was getting into, but knew this was a society was going to throw her into a world that she will never be able to escape. All she has to do is watch out for a mysterious secret of her past that carries a sharp bite. Easy right?

My favorite moment of a book is watching a character grow and develop. I enjoy experiencing the story with them. A well written person captivates an audience. Charlotte MacLaren is one of those characters that is interesting and not perfect. She felt real and down to earth. I love that there is a mysterious nature about her that is eye catching. The author took the main character and made her extremely prevalent to each moment of the book, but her supporting characters bring a lot of joy. Their differences make them a group of people with a whole lot of personalities combined. The author made these personalities meld together in a unique way. With some mythological books, the people will sometimes seem out of line or not together. Not this story. I am waiting to read the next installment to see the growth of these wonderful characters.

I have read a lot of different supernatural style books. Out of all the genres, this one is definitely difficult to write. The unrealistic nature of the storyline can make a reader lose interest if not done properly. I found that I love this story. It is simple to read and not too complicated. I have a strong feeling that once the author gets into their own style of writing, it will be great to see the growth.

My Rating: After reading this book, I give this book a strong 3 stars. I know that the next ones to follow will be something that I want to read. I want to experience Charlotte’s story with her. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to review this book on behalf of the author. I believe the work was strong, although some moments made you want more information. There were moments that didn’t seem to fully fit in the story. Overall, this is a wonderful first story.
