THE PAST BY KENNETH THOMAS

Rating: 5 out of 5.

DISCLAIMER: I was lucky enough to read this book after the author reached out to me. I hope the prospective reader will read this review fully before making any prejudgments on the book. I will give the book my thoughts, good and bad. Also, this review contains opinions that are my own and not the author’s. My thoughts will be different from your thoughts and just know that before reading the book.

Let’s take a step into the world of an enforcer living in a dystopian earth. The year is 3000. With an authoritarian ruler called the Universal Council as a boss, a task is given to an enforcer. This task is a special one. An enforcer has to travel through time to stop a renegade sect. The fear is that they will change earth’s past, but a twist happens when he learns about his dark origins and his unique ability. His biggest task yet is deciding to save the woman he loves and be part of a new beginning. Did I mention his love is the daughter of the leader that he met in the future?

When it comes to the background, this one was interesting. What most people would find basic sci-fi, I was caught off guard. I never read a book this complex, yet this easy to read. There is time travel and a society that is parallel to our own, or well, his own. I never felt the story shoving the sci-fi portion in your face. It was naturally integrated into the plot. The most important part of this book is the sci-fi portion. It is the entertainment. I noticed that there were moments where it wasn’t the focus and it made the book an interesting read. There was futuristic moments, time travel, and historical moments that are put together beautifully. It makes the story complex and whole.

The characters were brilliantly written! They were incredibly diverse and whole. They are human and feel that way. It doesn’t feel two dimensional. Quite the opposite in fact. The sci-fi side felt like a character of its own. It is hard to describe the people that make this novel. I found that the emotions and creatures surrounding them create this whole world that feels so different than the one we live in today. The concept of so many aspects of the future that fit together so perfectly made me think about a character. This character is time. I find this is one of the most well written stories that I have read. It is amazing what incredible characters can do for a story.

My rating: This book is hands down a 5 out of 5 stars. There is no question about it. I have to say, I am not overly familiar with sci-fi books. I haven’t read too many of them that I actually truly enjoy. This is one where I felt as if it was too the point and it didn’t make my head spin. If I had the time to read this book in one go, I definitely would have. I think that I am excited to read on. I can’t wait to see the story continue and jump into the next part of the story. There is more that needs to be told and I can’t wait to see what is to come on this everlasting adventure.

I hope this review helps you in making your next book choice. Happy reading!
